Dive into Dance is a potent mix of choreography, performance and Extended Reality Technology (XR). Developed by Antoine Marc and XR Studio Milk It, dancer Sadé Alleyne moves powerfully and gracefully through a series of intricately designed phrases while interacting with digital visuals that appear to be in the space but are generated through Mixed Reality technology and volumetric capture. Dive Into Dance uses these elements as a means to explore the relationship between music and dance and how musical elements influence and inspire the choices that creators make and ultimately leads practitioners to create new immersive work.

Choreographic methods are varied and multitude and reflect the abundance and beauty of dance creation. This project sheds light onto just one choreographic method, while integrating the creative process into new technologies. Captured with XR technology, Sadé’s performance is merged with virtual visual content as movements are gradually linked to music. Bridging the gap between sounds, visuals and movements before bringing them together in a full showcase of dance, colour, and music.

The film utilises Extended Reality technology, specifically volumetric capture: a way of mixing virtual environment with real performance. During shooting the performer is immersed into the digital content while technology tracking camera’s direction and position to change the background around them. Though this method is relatively new, it has already been integrated into large film productions (such as ‘The Mandalorian’).
