Matt O'Riley feels more comfortable with Celtic after a full pre-season

Matt O'Riley believes he is in "a better place" this season as the Celtic midfielder looks to force himself into the Denmark squad for this year's World Cup finals.

The England-born 21-year-old has established himself in the Danish under-21 set-up since his January transfer from MK Dons.

"I'm happy that I adapted quickly, but I feel much more comfortable now," O'Riley said when asked about his first pre-season with the Scottish champions.

"So in that sense I feel that I'm in a good place and playing at a higher level."

O'Riley thinks Celtic's direct qualification for the Champions League group stage will help his international cause.

"It's a dream to play in such a high level competition especially considering where I was a year ago - even six months ago," he said.

Asked about his chances of making Kasper Hjulmand's World Cup squad, he replied: "It's not something I'm focused on every day, but it's definitely a target on the back of my mind.

"For me, it's important to strive for these things and with the position I'm in right now it's a possibility to do so, so I don't see the point in not trying."

O'Riley came through the Fulham youth ranks with Moritz Jenz and was "very pleased" with the on-loan Lorient centre-half's debut goal in last weekend's 3-1 win over Ross County.

"It's nice playing football with one of your long-time mates," he added. "I don't really care who scores to be honest, but with Moritz it was that extra bit special."

  13. Jota proves his worth...againpublished at 18:15 6 August

For Celtic, what a coup Jota's signing is. The winger, who shone on loan last season before returning on a permanent deal this summer, notched three assists in another inspirational display.

A potential downside for Ange Postecoglou will be how frustrated his side were in the opening 45 minutes. 83% possession, 339 passes, 112 in the final third, yet only three shots on target.

The strength in depth of his bench, though, proved crucial with Liel Abada making an impact after his half-time introduction.

  14. Celtic frustrated by County? Not for Postecogloupublished at 18:11 6 August

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou isn't having any of the talk that his side were frustrated by Ross County as they ran out 3-1 victors

He told BBC Scotland: “I'm really happy with the result and the performance.

"It's a difficult place to come but I thought the players were outstanding at controlling the game and minimising their threats.

"Their keeper's pulled off some great saves but it’s difficult - when the other team park 10 men in their box - to find some space, so I thought we did well. I thought we controlled the game well.

"I don't think we were frustrated at all, we minimised their threat, they scored from a corner. Our play was really good, it was a matter of time for the goals to come and thankfully they came."

On goal-scoring debutant Moritz Jenz, he added: "His overall performance was really good, he's fitting in well and training really well. It's great for him to get his goal. He's very dominant in the air so hopefully it's the first of many."
